Restrictions breached twice

A formal warning has been issued for two cases where restrictions on farms affected by Mycoplasma bovis were breached.

One breach related to a broken fence through which cattle moved  on to an empty paddock.

The other instance involved a motorbike being taken off a property.

Sixteen farms, all in the Van Leeuwen Dairy Group, are on restricted place notices after positive tests were returned for the cow disease.

The notices legally prevent the movement of animals, equipment and risk materials from the property.

Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) response director Geoff Gwyn said in the motorbike case the vehicle was cleaned so the risk was "managed" but, because a permit to move the vehicle was not applied for, there was a breach.

A formal warning covering both cases, which happened in the past two weeks, was issued last weekend and on Monday MPI representatives met  Van Leeuwen group members and other organisations to "make sure they’re in a position to comply".

"I think it’s important to note that they didn’t actually represent a biosecurity risk in either case.

"They were technically breaches of the notice."
