Police ran a campaign from May 26 to June 8 between Whiterocks Rd and Maudes Rd, including the overbridge on State Highway 1, when 51 infringement notices were issued.
Thirty-two were for failing to keep left under the overbridge.
"In spite of all the publicity about the overbridge, people are still crossing the centre line.
Potentially, there were 32 head-on crashes waiting to happen," highway patrol Sergeant Pete Muldrew said yesterday.
Police and Transit NZ want the speed limit reduced to below 100kmh at the accident-prone bridge.
Transit has no plans for major road works to improve safety at the bridge.
Waitaki community safety co-ordinator Alison Banks said the number of infringements being issued was a real concern.
The bridge was an issue and it needed to be dealt with sooner rather than later.
