Survey on flood roads

A solution to flooding on two roads at Totara has been allocated $70,000 by the Waitaki District Council.

Fortification and Station Rds had water across them for months after flooding in May, making it very difficult for residents.

That was resolved in September when farmer and Fortification Rd resident Jock Webster pumped water away, with some financial support from the council.

Since then, the Otago Regional Council has also investigated the cause of flooding and drainage solutions.

The Waitaki District Council is expected to begin work early next year on the two roads to safeguard them from future flooding damage.

The favoured option was to raise the roads and the New Zealand Transport Agency had agreed to subsidise the work.

However, the final option will depend on survey work being done to determine what type of intervention is required.

''Careful consideration must be given to how these roads are modified, not only to minimise damage from future flooding but also that the work carried out does not shift the problem from these roads to other areas,'' council roading manager Michael Voss said.
