The sole occupant of a single-cab utility vehicle was killed yesterday when it left the road and crashed into a creek bed near Ngapara.

The male driver, reported today by NZPA as an 80-year-old Oamaru man,  was driving on the Ngapara-Tokarahi Rd towards Tokarahi when he tried to turn left in McCulloch Rd, about 3km west of Ngapara.

Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru police, said the driver appeared to have lost control of the vehicle, which left the road.

It ended on its roof in a creek bed about 5m below the road.

Police were called to the crash at 2.43pm, along with fire rescue units from Weston and Oamaru.

Sgt Woodbridge said police were investigating what time the crash had occurred, but it was not during the night.

The Serious Crash Unit was called to investigate.

The name of the dead man would not be available until next of kin had been notified.
