"Mindless" is how Oamaru Rowing Club captain Donald Taylor describes the slashing of tyres on a trailer loaded with boats to go to the Maadi Cup regatta.

The vandalism was discovered shortly after 7.30am yesterday outside the club's headquarters at Friendly Bay.

The shed the trailer would usually be stored in was being demolished.

All the trailer tyres were slashed, including the spare tyre and jockey wheel, but fortunately none of the nine boats were damaged, which was a relief as they could not be replaced so close to a regatta.

The Maadi Cup regatta starts at Lake Ruataniwha on Monday and Oamaru's contingent of 31 young rowers will be heading to Twizel over the weekend.

The boats were being taken yesterday once the tyres had been replaced. The incident had been reported to police.
