Views on liquor ban bylaw sought

People are being urged to have their say during a review of the liquor ban bylaw.

In particular, Cr Peter Garvan wants to hear the public's views on easing the total ban on the consumption of liquor in the Oamaru Harbourside area.

The Waitaki District Council has called for public submissions on the liquor ban bylaw review, which close on October 27 at 5pm.

The review includes allowing temporary bans in defined areas, particularly during the Christmas holidays and events such as the Omarama rodeo, and extending the ban in central Oamaru.

However, the review has left the total ban in the Oamaru harbour and surrounding areas in place.

The council has asked people to give their views on the Harbourside ban, perhaps considering whether liquor should be allowed to be consumed during daylight hours at picnics, barbecues and other gatherings.

Cr Garvan said alcohol was not banned from the Oamaru public gardens and the Harbourside area should also be exempt.

People who make submissions on the review could also ask to be heard at the council meeting on November 3, when it will consider any changes.
