Public praised by police

Alexandra police praised the public for helping control an accident scene on Centennial Ave on Saturday.

Senior Constable Brett Pay said a 56-year-old woman from Cromwell was on the pedestrian crossing outside Postie Plus at 12.15pm when she was struck by a Nissan Sunny sedan driven by a 51-year-old male visiting Alexandra from Australia.

He said the public was "terrific" in controlling the scene until the ambulance got there.

He said the woman was taken to Dunstan Hospital then Dunedin Hospital. It was understood she had serious but not life-threatening injuries.

He said her head struck the windscreen of the car and she received serious facial injuries, as well as suspected fractures.
