20 campers get notices

More than 20 camper van occupants have been issued with infringement notices for freedom camping in the Lake Hawea township and beach area so far this summer.

For the second year, Lake Hawea volunteer community wardens have been able to issue $200 infringement notices when campers breach Queenstown Lakes District Council freedom camping bylaws.

Volunteer Di Turnbull told the Otago Daily Times yesterday camper vans pulling into Lake Hawea from State Highway 6 passed three signs saying freedom camping was not permitted.

She had found vans or cars parked beneath one of the signs.
