$400 for Wanaka blaze victims

More than $400 was raised for Wanaka fire victims John and Tracy Scott and their two children by the Upper Clutha Rugby Club at a game played at the Tarras rugby ground on Saturday.

The Scott family were forced to flee from their home on Thursday night when they awoke to find the property on fire.

The house, a holiday home owned by Mrs Scott's parents, was destroyed by a blaze which quickly engulfed the Rata St property, consuming personal items belonging to the young family.

Mr Scott is a long-term stalwart of the Upper Clutha Rugby Club.

The former premier team captain played centre for many seasons and was club captain last year.

Upper Clutha club captain and former club president Ali Grant said the $400 was raised from gate takings at a yearly one-off match.

"Everyone from the club really wants to get in behind and help them out - especially given the many years Scotty has put in for us," he said.

The rugby club committee were holding their monthly meeting next Monday and planned to discuss further initiatives to help the young family, Mr Grant said.

Mr Scott said he felt "very humbled" by all the assistance from the rugby club and from the whole community.

"It's real nice to know there are people out there in the community who will help you out. We really appreciate everything and I hope people know just how much their help means to us," he said.

The Scott family are in the midst of building a new property for themselves and are staying with friends while insurance claims are processed.

Many offers of help, clothes, and toys have been made.

The Schwarz-Milesi family, of Wanaka, were inundated with offers of help and accommodation after their house burnt down last year and in 2006 Hawea Flat homeowners Mark Thomas and Jane Crawford-Thomas were similarly assisted.
