Queenstown Lakes mayoral candidate Al Angus says Wanaka residents do appear to be getting ''the short end of the stick'' from the district council.

Mr Angus, of Kinloch, was responding to questions from the Otago Daily Times about the recently launched ''Respect Wanaka'' campaign, which is encouraging people to place informal votes in the coming mayoral election to show neither incumbent Vanessa Van Uden nor Mr Angus represents the views of Wanaka.

''[Wanaka] people are certainly not idiots so if they think they are not being treated with respect, they are probably right,'' Mr Angus said.

''I am not yet privy to the inner workings of the council but you [Wanaka] do seem to be getting the short end of the stick.''

When asked how he planned to address the concerns of Wanaka residents, he said there would have to be ''at least a meeting just to clear the air and start getting a bit more united. Inclusive is probably the word I'm looking for''.

Mr Angus also clarified his remark in the Wanaka Sun newspaper last week that he did not know what Wanaka wanted and had not taken much notice for years.

''My comment on Wanaka wasn't an off-the-cuff dismissal, just a statement of fact. I doubt Wanaka has taken much notice of Kingston or Glenorchy either, lately. We all seem to be hovering around the mothership hoping for crumbs. That has to change.''

Mr Angus believed it was the only time in 30 to 40 years there had been a chance of a ''genuine community council'' being elected, and offered his endorsement to several candidates who he felt could get the council ''back to its community roots''.
