Appeal in wake of boat burglary

Wanaka police are appealing for public help in their investigation of a burglary of the Dual Image catamaran about 11pm on January 2, while it was moored in Roys Bay on Lake Wanaka.

Sergeant Paul Crosswell yesterday appealed for information from anyone who knew about the burglary, had seen any suspicious behaviour in the area at the time, or could help identify two men and two women and a double-cab four-wheel-drive utility vehicle seen in the area on Saturday night.

It appeared someone had swum to the boat from the area of lake shore near the wharf, Sgt Crosswell said. Detective Dave Evans said a door was broken to gain entry to the vessel.

It did not appear anything had been taken.

• Four holiday house burglaries were also reported to Wanaka police over the Christmas-New Year period by two house owners in Eely Point Rd and one each in McKay St and Rata St.

Constable Mike Thomas yesterday said three of the houses had been thoroughly searched by the intruders and a significant amount of alcohol was taken.

Some electrical appliances were also missing and some windows had been damaged.

Const Thomas said the burglaries probably occurred during the five- to six-week period before the holidays.

Reports of burglaries were usual at this time of the year and it was important holiday-home owners got to know their neighbours and asked them to keep an eye on their property while they were away.

It was also a reminder to check security on holiday houses, Const Thomas said.

• Wanaka police also received 50 items of lost property over the holiday week.
