A barbecue blaze which set fire to a Queenstown carport yesterday went from bad to worse when it ignited a car.

Frankton residents (from left) stonemason Nigel Bryant, painter-decorator Katerina Sykorova and Keaton Bryant (16) are pictured surveying the charred debris of their Riverside Rd back yard after the 5.10pm emergency.

Mr Bryant said he suspected the fire flared because of the fat on the barbecue tray.

The tenants used a pair of jeans then water to fight the blaze as it spread to the dried grass fence, then the carport, then to Miss Sykorova's Toyota.

A neighbour aimed a hose at the flames until Frankton and Queenstown fire brigades and Queenstown police responded.

The housemates were not insured.

There were no injuries, but the adjacent property's garage wall was damaged.
