The Queenstown Lakes District Council's finance committee has refused to delegate powers to reappoint directors of council-controlled organisations to the Queenstown Lakes District Mayor, chief executive and deputy mayor.
A motion to the committee meeting yesterday asked members to delegate to any pairing among Mayor Clive Geddes, deputy mayor John S. Wilson and chief executive Duncan Field the power to reappoint directors of organisations including Lakes Environmental, Lakes Leisure and Queenstown Airport Corporation.
The motion was brought by council regulatory and corporate services manager Roger Taylor but was shot down by committee members, with Cr Vanessa Van Uden saying councillors should have a say on who was reappointed.
Mr Taylor said two directors of Lakes Environmental were retiring by rotation but wanted to be reappointed for a further four-year term.
A pairing among the mayor, deputy mayor and chief executive had previously delegated at council-controlled organisation AGMs but not on the reappointment of directors.
"Council policy is that other things being equal, directors appointed by council to boards . . . are appointed for no more than two terms of no more than four years," Mr Taylor said.
He said the motion would allow that policy to come into effect.
The reappointment of directors would still have to go to full council meetings.
• Committee members approved a Companies Act waiver to Lakes Environmental after it failed to provide some information in its annual report.
Mr Taylor said "because of an oversight" the report did not include changes to the nature and classes of the company and the total remuneration received by directors.
