Queenstown Lakes residents are being urged to support the eagerly-awaited concert by Flight of the Conchords to encourage more world-class acts to perform in the district.

Wellington's favourite sons Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, New Zealand's fourth-most popular guitar-based, digi-bongo, a capella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo turned Oscar winner and Hollywood star respectively, announced their national tour this week.

They will play the Queenstown Events Centre on Sunday, June 24. About 1500 tickets will be available through Ticketek pre-sales for 24 hours from Tuesday at 5pm, then 300 tickets for sale at the events centre on Friday at 8am. Internet and telephone sales will be available from noon.

McKenzie said in the Conchords' announcement it was going to be great to play in New Zealand again.

"I can't wait to perform where people can understand our accents," he said.

Clement said: "We're looking forward to this tour. It's a lot more convenient than going to another country, isn't it?"

Lakes Leisure events and venues manager Jason Marrable said yesterday the booking proved quality acts would come to quality venues and residents needed to get behind the show.

"We have fantastic acts come through and they're not always supported and promoters don't come back. This is a chance for Queenstown [people] to show they are serious about having big events here."
