The Wanaka Chamber of Commerce is bidding to host a national conference bringing together delegates from New Zealand's 32 chamber organisations, in 2011.

The move comes on the back of some impressive membership growth numbers for the Wanaka chamber, with a 22% rise in local businesses joining the organisation during the past financial year, secretary Barb Macandrew said.

Wanaka faces competition from the Auckland Chamber of Commerce for hosting rights for the conference and a decision is expected next year.

"It would be a fantastic showcase for the chamber and also our local tourism providers, many of whom are members of the chamber," Mrs Macandrew said.

Thirty people had joined the chamber during the past year, she said.

The rise in membership numbers had resulted in a boost of almost $6000 in the chamber's finances, a report tabled at the annual meeting, this week, detailed.

There was no change in personnel for the executive committee, with president Leigh Stock and committee members Ed Taylor, Laura Larsson, Alastair King, Helen Johnson, Steve Prescott, and Andrew MacKenzie retaining their places.

The committee members are also joined by representative for Cromwell, Glen Christianson, and Wanaka Community Board chairman Lyal Cocks, on behalf of the Queenstown Lakes District Council, Mrs Macandrew said.
