Church offers new outreach

A new way to worship on Sundays is being introduced by the Wakatipu Presbyterian Community Church - a free breakfast and then an informal discussion group about faith.

Manna Cafe opens its doors for the first time in the lower level of St Andrew's Community Church (Presbyterian), in Queenstown, on Sunday.

The weekly Christian gathering begins with cereal, toast, muffins and coffee from 8.30am to 9am, followed by a 40-minute "low key way of discovering together the basic message and teaching of Jesus, where everyone is warmly welcomed", retired minister and church elder Peter Willsman, of Kelvin Heights, said.

"We're aware there's a secular society and time is a factor for families who want to get away for activities. There's a desire to do church and find faith in a different way to a formal service."

Mr Willsman will be part of a team of Wakatipu lay people, who include a teacher, an accountant, a builder, a banker and tourism staff.

Supported by the Wakatipu Parish council, the cafe involved, "asking questions [and] discussing relevant issues as we sit around cafe tables, and offers a new way of worship, learning, and finding friends," Mr Willsman said.

"The concept is to start the day with an informal breakfast and then be away by 9.45am and have the rest of the day free."
