Conference centre ideas invited

Concepts for a conference centre in Queenstown are being sought by the steering group investigating its feasibility.

Queenstown Lakes Mayor Vanessa van Uden said the group was looking for feedback on what a conference centre could look like, having already done "extensive" research into what local and international event organisers required.

The information had allowed the group to "shape a brief", which had been released so people could have their say.

The brief said there was a preference for a "central Queenstown location", but the group was encouraging concepts for any location.

The "wish list" included capacity for 1200 people seated or 1000 people seated "banquet style"; between six and eight breakout rooms, all soundproofed and easily divisible; and self-contained kitchen facilities.

It also needed space for parking and bus pick-up and drop-off; a "dedicated registration area/large multi-use foyer"; natural light and views in tandem with the ability for all spaces to be blacked out; and an exhibition space capable of holding 100 booths.

"The brief outlines some of the requirements for a potential conference centre and is heavily informed by what we've been told will attract conferences here and what we've observed works successfully elsewhere," Ms van Uden said.

"We're interested in hearing other people's concepts and ideas for this project, including potential locations, sources of funding and planning considerations.

"A conference centre has the potential to become a valuable driver of the Queenstown economy, helping to flatten out the peaks and troughs of seasonal tourism demand.

"We know that there are many people in the community with excellent ideas ... and we're looking forward to to adding those ideas to the mix."

Feedback should be submitted to the council by 4.30pm on October 14 and should include location; ownership; how the concept would meet the "wish list" items; any constraints; and funding.

The brief is available from council offices or at www.qldc.govt.nz.

Feedback will be accepted by mail or email.
