Upper Clutha residents Bev Rudkin (left), of Wanaka, and Graham Taylor, of Luggate, were surprised with mayoral citations from Queenstown Lakes Mayor Vanessa van Uden at a community board meeting in Wanaka yesterday.

In 2009, Mrs Rudkin established the Upper Clutha Children's Medical Trust, and in 2013 she established the Upper Clutha Hospice Trust.

She co-ordinated 50 volunteers in her role as the manager of the Wanaka Hospice shop.

Mrs Rudkin said her work had been facilitated by the work of others.‘‘I'm just one person''.

Graham Taylor was recognised for his role as co-ordinator of the Red Bridge centenary, which was celebrated in October.

Mr Taylor said he had ‘‘a lot of fun'' researching the history of the Upper Clutha for the celebration.

It was ‘‘an honour'' to be recognised alongside Mrs Rudkin.

He said it was important young people were encouraged to take up volunteer work.

‘‘My headmaster at high school in Christchurch made a point that it was good to take an interest in the community.

‘‘It set an ethic that it was about teamwork.''
