Cycleways and walkways on agenda

The building of more cycleways and walkways in the Queenstown Lakes district is being actively pursued by the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

A draft strategy prepared by the district council advocates annual funding of up to $500,000 to develop dedicated walking and cycling projects.

The Wanaka Community Board gave the draft strategy its approval when it was tabled during the board's monthly meeting yesterday.

A 43% slice of the total annual funding will come from Land Transport New Zealand, should the draft strategy be successfully adopted by the council, once it has been through a public consultation process.

The strategy seeks to improve the transport options available to the district's residents with a focus on off-road cycleways and walking tracks.

The $500,000 dedicated annual funding for improving cycle and walkways equates to less than 2% of the Queenstown Lakes District Council's annual roading expenditure.
