Cyclist severely injured in downhill lake crash

A woman was severely injured in Queenstown last night after losing control of her bicycle on Suburb St.

Acting Senior Sergeant Phil Hamlin, of Southern District Command, said police were called by a member of the public about 4.15pm, reporting a person had been biking down the street, had gone "straight across'' Park St and into Lake Wakatipu.

"Initial reports [were] that they were in the water ... I think ... they were just on the edge of the water.

"It's pretty rocky and boney in through there.

"As a precaution, the Coastguard was paged and police made contact with KJet who sent a boat from the ... marina.''

Acting Snr Sgt Hamlin said police found a woman, in her 20s, on the rocks.

St John Ambulance transported her to Lakes District Hospital with a suspected dislocated shoulder and abrasions.

It was believed slick roads may well have contributed to the woman being unable to stop her bicycle when travelling down the steep street.

No further information was available last night.
