New Zealand and Indian relations were fostered when 70 members and guests of the Queenstown Indian Community organisation dined and danced in celebration of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, on Saturday night.

The organisation was started about six months ago, by five Indian women who all live in Frankton.

The festive occasion in the Spice Room was its first official function.

The event was complete with traditional decorations, treats and buffet cuisine.

The founders wanted Kiwi friends to experience their Indian culture and a harvest festival was planned for the new year.
