Draft facilities mix

A draft facility-mix proposal for the Wanaka Sports Facility was released by the Queenstown Lakes District Council this week, ahead of the second round of community consultation starting next week.

The council commissioned Global Leisure Ltd to complete a recreation planning study for the facility within the new Three Parks zone off State Highway 6, following community consultation during July and August.

The 50% projected growth in the Upper Clutha's resident population by 2031 was factored into the initial development and future-proofing plans for the site and facilities.

QLDC project manager Ken Gousmett said much of the resulting draft facility recommendation was similar to that originally proposed, with some "important differences".

These included three indoor courts as part of stage one instead of two, and five courts altogether instead of three; provision for a High Performance Sport New Zealand centre of excellence; and grouping of the indoor facilities, including reception and administration, near the centre of the site, with playing fields and car parks around the perimeter to give buffer space to residential zones.

The second round of public consultation begins on Monday with a community presentation of the report at 7.30pm in the Lake Wanaka Centre.
