Catering manager Dianne Denver said Pot the Dragon's predecessor had worked hard for more than 10 years, but he was "weary and worn and ready to retire".
A worldwide internet search began last year, the job description requiring a friendly dragon who loved children and would keep them entertained, and who was easy-going and partial to Walter Peak's scones and pikelets.
A dragon with a sunny disposition was found in California, but transporting him from the United States to Queenstown proved a difficult task, involving six months of work and difficulties with couriers to get him to the resort.
However, Pot was now firmly ensconced on Earnslaw and had been practising his singing for his starring role with children on the 10am and noon cruises to Walter Peak from Boxing Day until January 7, Mrs Denver said.
