DVD for road anniversary

Organisers of the 50th anniversary of the only road between Glenorchy and Queenstown are calling for people who built it to tell their story for a DVD documentary.

A Wakatipu committee is collecting photographs, newspaper clippings and television footage and raising funds to commission Invercargill film-maker David Beck to produce the record.

"The people involved with [the road] are elderly and we want to get their stories while they are still around to tell them," committee secretary Elaine Kirkland said.

"The 50th anniversary is coming up next year, in October. It's still being finalised, but it coincides with the 150th for the district and the 100th for the Earnslaw."

The one-hour documentary would document why a road was needed, its construction and its effects on the township.

"At the time, our only access, in or out of Glenorchy, was by boat, two or three times a week. If anything happened ... you had to get an aeroplane, or a special launch and they were weather-dependent. It was quite a major event to do anything," Mrs Kirkland said.

People could contact her on (03) 442-9952.
