Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean is preparing to take another private members' Bill to Parliament to try to get Wanaka retailers a right to legally trade over Easter.

Mrs Dean has gained approval from the National Party caucus to spearhead a Bill directed specifically at the Queenstown Lakes district, which she says will address concerns in Wanaka about Easter trading.

It would apply specifically to the Queenstown Lakes District Council and aim to correct the anomalies in the Shop Trading Hours Act Repeal Act (1990), in which Queenstown was granted a general exemption to trade at Easter but Wanaka was not, she said.

A private members' Bill, which would have given retailers the option of Easter trading, was defeated in Parliament in December last year.

A private members' Bill from Mrs Dean, to amend shop trading laws, was also defeated in May 2007.

It was unlikely any changes to the Shop Trading Act would come into effect before Easter 2010 when Wanaka hosted thousands of visitors for the biennial Warbirds Over Wanaka Airshow, Mrs Dean said.
