A fashionable return to days of yore at the Cardrona Vintage Fair is planned tomorrow to raise funds to commemorate some of the historic township's early settlers - and later residents who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Cardrona Valley Community Association wants to build a monument and statue to recognise the township's gold-mining heritage and the contribution made by those who fought for New Zealand in the two world wars of last century.

Proceeds from the historic township's third annual fair will go towards funding the monument.

Association secretary and fair organiser Hil Stapper said an array of country stalls, gold-panning exhibitions, food offerings and live music would be featured.

"Virtually everyone" in Cardrona would be involved with the fair, she said.

Many of the valley's residents dress up in period costume and vintage clothes, reminiscent of the township's original settlers and gold-mining boom.

The fair will be held at the Cardrona Hotel from noon tomorrow.
