It could have been spring at Cardrona Alpine Resort yesterday as the skifield opened for the season in bright sunshine and warm temperatures.

Brent Hartley (left), from Australia, and Nicholas Murphy, from Ireland, were two who glided up the learners' slope on the ''magic carpet'' conveyor belt.

A lack of snow meant only parts of the field were open but, with half-price passes, quite a number of beginners were giving it a go on the learners' slopes.

Marketing manager Nadia Ellis pointed out last season's opening day was postponed because there was too much snow to deal with.

Although snow and rain is forecast for the field today, two fine warm days are expected to follow before there is the prospect of more fresh snow later in the week.
