Nearly 30 Wakatipu High School pupils nearing the end of their school years took a leap into the unknown on Monday, taking up free A.J. Hackett "Rite of Passage" graduation bungy jumps.

The annual event, now in its fourth year, has seen more than 100 year 13 pupils dive from the Kawarau Bridge bungy site in celebration of the end of their secondary school careers.

One of about 27 who made the jump, 17-year-old Bonnie Wilkins admitted to being scared, especially while standing on the edge, but was glad her schoolmates had convinced her make the jump.

Completing the jump in tandem with her best friend Liv Calb (17), she said it was "an awesome way to end the school year".

"It's definitely a great experience, and I think it's great that they [A.J. Hackett] give us the opportunity to do that."

A.J. Hackett marketing manager Katie Sheely said the jumps not only gave the pupils the bungy experience, but also acted as a final bonding session for the excited teenagers.

"Just as Queenstown is the birthplace of bungy, it is also the birthplace of many of the year 13 students at Wakatipu High School."
