Help wanted with stone huts

Clearing scrub from the ruins of a pioneer-era mining settlement near the Arrow River will be a World Environment Day project on Monday and the call has gone out for volunteers.

Cooper's Tce, about 1km from Arrowtown on the road to Macetown, was one of many small settlements built near the banks of the river during the 1860s gold rush. The stone huts were almost forgotten until two years ago.

Nomad Safaris driver-guide Fran O'Connor said the four-wheel-drive scenic tour operator was organising another working bee at the terrace on June 4, because it was World Environment Day on June 5.

"It is really exciting, as wepull away stuff and see morerock walls and remnants of old cottages that the gold-miners built," Ms O'Connor said.

"The grass has become overgrown again, but after it is chopped back this time, [it] will be sprayed in the spring.

"When up there ... last year, we did start to uncover more of the rock walls, and so on. It is pretty amazing that all this has stayed hidden for so long."

Ms O'Connor said interested volunteers were encouraged to call Nomad Safaris on (03) 442-6699.

"We will meet at Nomads, on Industrial Pl, at 1.30pm, or the Chinese settlement at 1.45pm, and will have afternoon tea with us. It could be cold and dampish underfoot, so please come prepared.

"If you have tools, shears will definitely be needed, and a rake or two, and loppers and saws. We will have tools with us if you don't have any."
