A family woman with experience of sport and recreation in Auckland will take control of all leisure activities and facilities for the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

Ruth Stokes has been appointed the new chief executive of Lakes Leisure and will take up the position on November 12.

Working previously with the Auckland City Council and its successor, the Auckland Council, Mrs Stokes specialises in the planning and delivery of arts, community services, sport and recreation and parks, as well as the establishment and governance of council-controlled organisations (CCOs), the Queenstown Lakes District Council said in its announcement yesterday.

Mrs Stokes also operated successfully in infrastructure, banking and international consulting.

Lakes Leisure board member Peter Faul said the board was "extremely pleased" to welcome Mrs Stokes to the Lakes Leisure team.

"Ruth's experience working with CCOs as well as in the wider council environment places her in extremely good standing for the challenges of the role.

"Her work in those organisations was predominantly community focused and she is very passionate about improving the quality of life within our community, which is one of Lakes Leisure's key objectives."

Having recently moved to Queenstown with her husband and five children, Mrs Stokes is already enjoying the outdoor lifestyle the district offers and is looking forward to taking up her leadership role within Lakes Leisure, the statement said.
