'Mad Ratters' finish stint

The ''Mad Ratters' Tea Party'' is over for Wanaka helicopter pilot Peter Garden.

He arrived home from the subantarctic island of South Georgia this week, having completed the aerial poisoning of rats on about two-thirds of the island.

He was one of six New Zealanders in a British team that called itself ''Team Rat'' and described its four-month stint over summer as a ''tea party''.

Mr Garden said it was -14degC when he left South Georgia, but he was keen to return in 2015, when the poisoning programme would be completed.

''I'm committed to completing the programme. It's an incredible place to have the opportunity to go and work in, but it's still a pretty rugged and remote environment.''
