The man is understood to be an employee of Opus International.
He was treated by St John from Wanaka and two paramedics with the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter before being flown south.
Advanced paramedic Doug Flett said the patient's condition was satisfactory.
Constable Sean Hurley attended the accident to assist St John.
The accident occurred about 5km from the turn-off to Lake Hawea, on the fringes of Glendene Station, and was entirely off the road, he said.
Department of Labour Otago service manager Mark Murray confirmed yesterday the department was investigating.
Opus International operations manager Robin Whiting could not be contacted yesterday for comment.
