New filter ordered for pool

Wanaka councillors have taken urgent action to start the approval process to buy a new filter for the ageing swimming pool, with the hope the estimated reopening date can be brought forward by two weeks to September 25.

Lakes Leisure aquatics manager Cam Sheppard said yesterday he had ordered a diatomaceous earth filter (known as a DE filter) from a supplier.

He expects it to arrive by September 14.

It would take several days to install the filter and another week to heat the pool, so opening was likely on September 25, the weekend before school holidays.

Wanaka Community Board chairman Lyal Cocks said yesterday the councillors decided the filter was urgent and should be ordered without waiting for finance committee approval on September 21.

Queenstown Lakes District Council finance committee chairman John S.

Wilson, of Wanaka, confirmed yesterday he had given consent.

The filter is expected to cost about $40,000.

Mr Sheppard said as a new pool was "off the radar" for the next 10 years, it was important to keep the existing one going.

"It is a really good wee swimming pool and can continue with an increased level of service. We are spending considerable money to keep it going," he said.

He had thought earlier the pool might not reopen until October.
