No injuries when rental car rolls

Three people escaped injury when a car rolled on the Crown Range road yesterday morning.

Wanaka police praised the driver of the car, a woman from Sydney, who guided the sliding rental car into a bank about 500m from a chain bay, where she had planned to stop and put chains on her vehicle.

The crash happened about 1km from the Crown Range summit, on the Wanaka side, shortly after 9am.

Constable Bruce McLean said weather conditions were fine when the party left Wanaka but snow became heavier as they approached the summit of the Crown Range.

No charges would be laid as signs advising motorists to fit chains were not in place at the time of the accident.

The car's occupants were taken by police to the Cardrona skifield bus pick up area.
