A $50,000 bike park at Lismore Reserve in Wanaka is nearing completion after nearly a month of earth-moving work and design shaping.
The new mountain-biking park features a network of trails hidden in a forest of pines at Lismore Park and includes a variety of jumps and berms catering to riders of different levels.
Built with funds raised by community groups and from the Queenstown Lakes District Council, the project is the brainchild of the Lake Wanaka Cycling (LWC) association.
LWC president Willem Groenen said the new park will give mountain-bikers an additional alternative to the popular Sticky and Plantation Forests, which recently had their jumps and other large features removed from trails by designated custodians the Office of Treaty Settlements.
Mr Groenen said the new jumps needed time to settle and compact and asked riders to respect the park and steer clear of features until the necessary final construction and building work was completed.
An official opening date has been set down for late June, after final touches to a single track perimeter cross-country trail is finished.
The trails and riding lines will be graded with colour-coded designations for various technical levels, Mr Groenen said.
