Queenstown is New Zealand's preferred domestic holiday destination this summer, according to an online survey of more than 11,000 people.

The travel website Travelbug showed 82% of those surveyed intended on travelling within New Zealand these summer holidays and, for 15% of those, Queenstown was their first choice.

Queenstown also came out as the favourite place people had already visited and TradeMe head of travel Daniel Bridges said the tourism capital was popular because it was built for visitors.

"It's no longer just a winter playground. There's so much to see and do and it really is an exhilarating place to be all year round."

Mr Bridges outlined adventure companies, such as ZipTrek Ecotours, Shotover Jet and Bungy, as some of the resort's biggest tourist attractions in summer.

He said it made sense for Queenstown's to be particularly popular among younger age groups, as 26% of those aged between 18 and 29 picked it as their No 1 choice for a holiday destination.

The online survey revealed New Zealand's biggest hotel hygiene fear, with 32% wary of unclean sheets.

New Zealanders also revealed other habits with 52% open to taking a souvenir from their room, including toiletries.

Men were more likely to wander into the wrong hotel room and 7% had done so.
