Blasting work at the Nevis Bluff, on State Highway 6 between Queenstown and Cromwell, will cause extended traffic delays tomorrow.
New Zealand Transport Agency project manager John Jarvis said drilling and blasting work on the bluff above the highway was vital to ensure the safety of road users.
However, the job involved removing about 200cu m of fractured rock to stabilise an area which had been assessed as posing a potential hazard to road users.
Subject to weather conditions, the blasting would be carried out between 1pm and 2pm tomorrow, Mr Jarvis said.
Outside the extended blast delay, work would continue between 8am and 5pm Monday to Friday, with openings for traffic every hour on the hour.
Between regular hourly openings, there would be traffic delays of up to 20 minutes.
Work at the bluff was expected to be completed by March 19.
