A "unique" combination of ski and snowboard rail jam and freestyle motocross (FMX) is scheduled for this Saturday at the Queenstown Recreation Ground.
Parklife Invitational, run by the Remarkables, is a freestyle ski and snowboard competition for which truckloads of snow are brought down from the mountain to central Queenstown.
The event was previously held at Earnslaw Park.
This year, snow stars will share their rails with motorsport stars, which Nitro Circus event manager Richard Stevenson said was unique to Queenstown.
"Combining a rail jam and FMX is pretty uncommon, and will be unique to Queenstown," he said.
"These guys are on 100kg dirt bikes and will take off 75 feet [23m] across the snow, landing doing back flips. It's pretty gnarly for people to watch.
"FMX is a huge competition in the US and Europe and is gaining momentum in Australia and New Zealand."
The line-up for the ski and snowboard competition features last year's snowboard winner Nick Brown and two-time past winner of the ski category Gus Kenworthy.
Kenworthy is flying to New Zealand from coaching at Momentum Ski Camps on the Whistler Blackcomb glacier, where he recently performed a new trick.
"The new trick that I landed was a variation of a double rodeo 990 off an up rail on the Momentum lane," he said.
"I've come down to New Zealand at least once a season for the past four years. Because it's the opposite season to the US, it's nice just to stay on the snow and keep working on tricks and making sure that everything is dialled in for the North American season."
Remarkables ski area manager Ross Lawrence said the competition's line-up was at a high level.
"It is the most renowned rail competition in New Zealand, and it attracts the nation's best skiers and snowboarders to battle it out on a choice of 32 stair handrails in a winner-take-all event."
He advised families to purchase their tickets from the Snow Centre to avoid queues at the gate.
Included in the line-up are members of the Queenstown-based Parklife team, Matt Soundy and Nick Hyne.
Soundy grew up in Queenstown and has been a sponsored skier since he was 14.
Hyne is from the North Island and is based in Queenstown and Japan.
• Parklife Invitational runs from 4.30pm-9.30pm on Saturday, August 25. Tickets are available from the Snow Centre for $5, or via cash sales at the gate on the night.
