Violent rampage in Queenstown

Queenstown police say four young Invercargill men went on a rampage at the weekend, attacking three people in "unprovoked, callous pack-attacks".

Sergeant Kate Pirovano told the Southland Times serious assault charges were pending for the four - who are aged between 16 and 20 - after the alcohol-fuelled attacks early on Saturday morning.

"These are brutal, unprovoked, callous pack-attacks, and this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated in Queenstown," she said.

In the worst incident, Sam Ross (31) was knocked unconscious and kicked in the head. His jaw was broken in two places and he was taken to Dunedin Hospital for surgery.

Within minutes the group had attacked two other men, leaving them with facial injures including a black eye and cut nose, police said.
Soon after this, they attacked the two men again, police said.

Police caught the alleged offenders near the Shell Service Station in Frankton Rd.

Detective sergeant Grahme Bartlett told the Southland Times said he was worried about violent assaults committed in Queenstown by Invercargill people.

"Twice in two weekends we have had suspects from Invercargill involved in violent incidents in Queenstown, and it is really concerning that they might be coming here with the purpose of causing trouble," he said.
