Top New Zealand artist Greg Johnson will return after years in Los Angeles to play in Queenstown, "one of my favourite places on Earth", and he is looking for a Wakatipu solo artist or duo to open his show.

The bestselling APRA Silver Scroll and twice Tui awards winner announced this week he and his three-piece band would embark on a nine-venue national tour from late May into June.

They would play songs from his new album Secret Weapon, his ninth studio recording.

The melodic pop singer-songwriter's Small Towns and Ball Gowns tour arrives in Queenstown in time for Queen's Birthday weekend and they play in Prime Waterfront Restaurant and Bar on Saturday, June 4.

Johnson said he was eagerly anticipating the chance to get back in front of his home fans.

"After a decade in a big city, I'm still a New Zealander and by definition a small-town guy at heart.

"My old tune Ball Gowns in Small Towns is still a crowd favourite and this tour captures the spirit of that song.

"It's been several years since we played the most beautiful city in New Zealand and one of my favourite places on Earth.

"I've played the winter festival here many times and I think a flood relief show and possibly a party or two.

"One gig we played I remember we kept blowing the power fuses at the pub in town, which was quite rock `n' roll for me, but we're more acoustic now," he said.

Johnson, who was born in Auckland, will give a helping hand to musicians in each town he tours by offering them the chance to play for 30 minutes before his performance.

Wakatipu solo artists or duos were invited to submit a track along with brief biography via his website, for Johnson to personally select his support act.

The chosen act will also receive a pair of tickets to his show, the opportunity to sell merchandise at the show and a small performance fee.

Artists will be notified by Friday, May 6.

All of Johnson's concerts will be recorded for the production of his first live album, Small Towns & Ball Gowns: Greg Johnson Live.

The album will be available to buy with show tickets and will be made available for download from Johnson's website after the tour.

The tour is supported by Air New Zealand, and as he travels, Johnson will be making surprise appearances at airports throughout New Zealand where he and his band will perform short acoustic sets to departing passengers.

The artist is also appearing at the Bluff Oyster Festival on May 21 and will accompany fellow passengers as they fly directly from to Auckland to Invercargill on a special Air New Zealand charter flight.

Tickets and ticket-album packages go on sale on Wednesday, April 6.

• Tickets and reserved dinner seating are available from Prime Waterfront Restaurant and Bar, in Queenstown, and tickets are available from Tatler Restaurant and Bar, Ticketmaster and www.gregjohnsonmusic.com
