Walkers warned to watch for avalanches

Trampers on popular tracks in the Queenstown Lakes district are being warned by the Department of Conservation (Doc) to be extra vigilant of hazardous snow and avalanche conditions in alpine areas.

Doc Wakatipu visitor assets programme manager Richard Kennett said there was much more snow around Western Otago than other areas.

Most of the snow fell in the past few weeks, which might catch the public unawares as it followed a relatively dry winter in the region, Mr Kennett said.

"Due to the recent falls of snow in the high country, Doc staff are closely monitoring conditions, which can change daily.

"It is currently recommended that people do not attempt to cross the Harris Saddle on the Routeburn Track due to slippery snow conditions and a fluctuating risk of avalanche, especially during periods of heavy rain."

Trampers intending to travel the Routeburn Track in the Great Walks season from now should prepare for a journey that was assisted by helicopter, the department said.

Walkers should contact Doc Visitor Centres for the latest information.

Deep and unstable snow conditions had also developed along the alpine sections of the Rees-Dart track, including Cascade Saddle.

Mr Kennett said travel in those areas should be "carefully considered".

"The swing bridge across the Upper Snowy River will not be reinstated until the area is clear of snow and avalanche debris. This may not be until early December.

"Unless people are very experienced in New Zealand high-country snow conditions, Doc would encourage people for their own safety to avoid alpine tracks and to take extreme care in any other areas affected by snow, particularly where the terrain is steep or slippery."

Mr Kennett said the Greenstone-Caples track could be completed, but care was still required when crossing sub-alpine areas.

Weather would play a major part in when the alpine sections of track would become safe for travelling and conditions could change daily.

Mr Kennett said Doc urged people to check the latest weather and track conditions on the Doc website or visitor centres at Te Anau, Wanaka and Queenstown.
