Cathedra Domine, by Wellington artist Rose Petterson, will be installed on private land owned by Mark Richter off West Wanaka Rd, after a resource consent for the proposal was granted last week.
The sculpture is a delicate framework of weathered mild steel rods representing a cathedral.
It was voted by the public as their favourite artwork in this year's Sculpture in Central Otago exhibition, held at Rippon Vineyard in Wanaka, from February until the end of April.
The exhibition is held every two years.
The site where the sculpture will be installed already has an approved residential building platform.
Cathedra Domine will be positioned 35m east of the building platform and, because the sculpture is 6m wide, 8m long and 5.3m high, it is considered to be a building under the district plan.
The proposal therefore involved a variation to a consent notice that requires all buildings be located within the residential building platform.
The sculpture will not be for public viewing and will be largely screened from the surrounding area by existing and proposed planting.
It will be visible from a short stretch of West Wanaka Rd, but will be set against a backdrop of farm buildings, rising landform and vegetation.
Adjoining neighbours gave affected persons consent.
