Bartenders dressed as nurses, doctors, bishops, Olympic athletes and fair dinkum Kiwis shook and mixed their way through a fruit salad of cocktail ingredients at Saturday's 42Below World Cocktail Cup 2008 in Queenstown.

The event, now into its fifth year in the adventure capital, was won by the London team with its "Ale of Two Cities" cocktail, served in beer handles.

Team members were John Goodman, Joshua Ivanovic and Sean Ware, The winning formula featured nettle cordial, along with the sponsor's feijoa-flavoured vodka, Punt e Mes vermouth, Granny Smith apple juices, malt syrup, freshly squeezed lime juice and Angostura bitters.

While the winning team was thrilled with its efforts, other teams, notably the South East Asia team, dressed as doctors and nurses and dished up the "medicine".

The USA East team, with its outrageous Olympic-themed, body-hugging and revealing red, white and blue lycra suits, also wooed the 300-plus crowd at the finals in the Queenstown Memorial Hall on Saturday afternoon.

Adding to the atmosphere of fun and frivolity was Auckland drag diva Miss 42, complete with lots of glitter make-up and sparkly diamond jewellery as well as plenty of Queenstown locals in fancy dress for the occasion.

While some wore policemen's hats, others wore boilersuits, crowns and tiaras.

Event MC Jason Briars said the event was "one of a kind", made exceptional by the Queenstown location.

"Thanks to Queenstown for getting behind this event that brings some of the best bartenders from around the world down under."
