Jett Timbrell, of Canterbury, sets off from the top of Coronet Peak on Saturday, competing in the under-19 male section of the Coro1200 mountainbike race, part of this year’s Queenstown Bike Festival.

Just over 150 entrants headed up the hill for the race, which took riders from the top of Coronet Peak to the valley floor, via the Dirt Serpent, Rude Rock, Morning Glory and Hot Rod trails.

It is one of about 21 events that form this year’s bike festival — other highlights over the weekend included the 16-inch Pub Champs, held at Arthurs Point’s Canyon Brewing, where carnage ensued as entrants tried to to race around a special course, which included a sandpit and a see-saw, on children’s bikes, and yesterday’s slopestyle at Fernhill’s Wynyard bike park.

Festival organiser Emmerson Wilken said about 30 children and 100 adults were expected to show of their skills in that event, which included eight different jumps across the track. Today’s main event is the pirate-themed dual slalom, being held on a grass course next to Remarkables Primary School at Frankton beach — the children’s event starts at 3pm followed by adults at 6pm.
