A rainy start to Queenstown’s biggest book fair failed to dampen enthusiasm for nabbing some good reads.

The crowds turning up for St Joseph’s School’s book fair increased as the skies brightened throughout yesterday’s event.

As well as four classrooms full of books, the fair featured entertainment and stalls selling food, coffee, crafts and plants.

Principal Alan Grant said he had heard people came from all over Otago and Southland for the event, but it was as much a community event as a book fair.

It was also the culmination of a lot of generosity by the school community, parishioners and the wider community throughout the year, Mr Grant said.

"It’s amazing the volume of books we have donated to us."

Businesses had provided about $30,000 in raffle and auction prizes.

Much of the funds raised from book sales and raffles, estimated to total about $35,000, would go towards learning support staff and school camps, he said.
