Committee agrees to airspace change

A plan change governing development at Wanaka Airport was approved by the Queenstown Lakes District Council strategy committee this week, paving the way for the council to call for public submissions.

Plan change 26 was presented for approval last month but was returned to staff to work through some minor amendments to reduce concerns held by neighbouring landowners and the New Zealand Transport Agency.

The plan change will alter the designation that protects the airspace around the airport.

The neighbours were concerned they would have to apply to the airport authority for approval if they set up objects on the ground that penetrated the airspace.

There are areas where the land is higher than the airspace, but they are shielded by surrounding higher terrain and unlikely to create a hazard, senior policy analyst Ralph Henderson said in a report to the strategy committee.
