Council accounts rectified after error causes undercharging

A computing error caused the Queenstown Lakes District Council to undercharge about 200 accounts for work on building and resource consents last month.

New rates for council services took effect on July 1, but a link between the human resources department and billing system was not updated.

The total adjustment was $10,160 and 223 accounts were affected. An incorrect charge was made for council employee charges from June 13 to August 3.

Council spokesman Jimmy Sygrove said the error was noticed at the end of July and was restricted to building and resource consents.

Invoices had been sent to those affected by the error.

''We prefer to get invoicing right the first time but as soon as we identified the error we rectified [the matter] with the affected customers, together with an apology,'' Mr Sygrove said.

There was no financial impact on people affected by the error other than some accounts being undercharged. The correct charges would have to be paid, he said.

Cost-recoverable charges were made for time on building and resource consents by council building and planning employees.
