New deputy mayor for the Queenstown Lakes district Calum MacLeod says he is keen as mustard to get started in his new role.

It was one he said he wanted and he was pleased it had been offered to him.

''I'm very pleased, not just for me but for the rest of the Upper Clutha.''

Balancing the role of councillor for the Upper Clutha and deputy mayor for the entire district would take time to get used to, he said.

''There's a lot I know and love about Queenstown but there is still more to learn and I'm excited about that.''

Mr MacLeod said he was looking forward to advocating for smaller communities, such as Glenorchy and Makarora.

It would take time for him and Mayor Jim Boult to know how each other worked, after meeting for the first time last month.

''I think we both agree it's a little bit like a marriage. You have your ups and downs and disagreements, but in the end you work together to do the best you can.''
