A new tourist lodge is being proposed for an area of outstanding natural landscape on the Mt Aspiring Rd side of Lake Wanaka west of Waterfall Creek.

The lodge is on a 17ha  property zoned rural general belonging to Gavin and Jaquetta George, of Wanaka, and is the subject of a notified resource consent application to the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

Mr George told the Otago Daily Times this week  the lodge and utility shed were designed and would be positioned to be as inconspicuous as possible from Mt Aspiring Rd and the lake.

"We’ve done our level best to mitigate any potential impact.

"The idea is to make it as invisible as possible, to have as little impact as possible."

"We recognise that it is an outstanding natural landscape and we absolutely don’t want to impinge on that."

Mr George said if approval was given for the lodge — to be called Roys Peak Lodge — it would be constructed to "passive house" standards, and would be the first commercial building of its type in the southern hemisphere.

The 640sq m, two-storey building, with a  412sq m footprint, would include nine en-suite bedrooms, living space, kitchen and utility areas.

There would also be an additional four-bay utility shed.

The maximum height of the lodge would be 7.6m and the building was designed to be consistent with the character of wool sheds or agricultural buildings, according to the consent application.

The lodge would operate year-round and provide accommodation and coaching packages to sports enthusiasts and special-interest groups.

It would also be used for up to 26 weddings or private functions a year involving up to 100 guests and 10 staff.

Marquees would not be used.

Public submissions close on September 29.
