A motorcyclist was seriously injured after being thrown about 40m from his bike in Fernhill Rd, Queenstown, last night.

The biker was comforted by members of the public as he lay on the road until St John paramedics and police arrived about 6.30pm.

A woman at the scene, who did not want to be named, said the man appeared to have a broken leg.

St John South Island region press officer Gerard Campbell said ''a patient with serious injuries [was] initially transported by road to Lakes Hospital''.

He was then flown to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter.

No further details were available last night.
